Middle School Teachers of Science, Social Studies, and Technology

WHEN: One Friday, Two Saturdays – April 8, 9, & 16, 2016 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

PARTICIPATING TEACHERS WILL:

  • LEARN to engage students in field-based data collection and analysis that contributes to a larger authentic scientific study: CITIZEN SCIENCE!

  • RECEIVE a Citizen Science Classroom Kit and Ongoing Support

  • EARN a Teacher Stipend for Participation & Implementation – $820

  • GAIN  ACCESS to a Mobile Citizen Science Technology Lab 

WHERE:  Waihee Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge(Day 1), Waikamoi Native Forest Preserve(Day 2), & Classroom/Computer Lab TBA(Day 3)

Additional Workshop & Program Details

This Workshop is the first part of a Spring 2016 Maui Watershed Citizen Science Program with three components:

  1. The 3 Day Teacher Workshop
  2. Engaging Students in Classroom and Field-based Learning*
    *COSTS for Bus Transportation, Substitutes, and Supplies Covered by Grant
  3. Participation in 2 Culminating Community Events

The Three Day Workshop:

Days 1 & 2 Fieldwork:
Citizen Science and Stewardship at Waikamoi Preserve (Native Forest) and at Waihe’e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge

  • Citizen Science Topics: Water Quality, Biodiversity, and Plankton
  • Stewardship: Planting Natives, Removing Invasives, and Removing Rubbish

Day 3 – Classroom:

  • Review of Fieldwork Completed and Data Collected: Citizen Science and Stewardship Data & Imagery Inventory
  • Engage in Student Pre and Post Fieldwork Lessons: Watershed Lab, NOAA Data Visualization, Plankton Study, & Developing a Watershed StoryMap
  • Preparation for Student Field Trips & Presentation of Watershed StoryMaps
  • Navigation of Program Website Resources

(Preference will be given to 7th Science Teachers and Interdisciplinary Teams, as the content is aligned to the NGSS and HCPS III Science  Standards for 7th Grade.)
